Summer is simultaneous with dust, excessive sunlight and scorching heat and humidity. Not only do these have an effect on your skin and hair but also on your eyes as well. We use sunscreen to protect our skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. In a similar manner we need to protect our eyes too. Overexposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun can lead to cataract, retinal damage and other eye problems as well. Here are some effective ways to keep your eyes cool during the summer months.

Purchase sunglasses with 100% UV protection

Inexpensive sunglasses with dark lenses can harm your eyes. Only lenses that provide 100% UV protection will give you the necessary protection from the Sun’s rays. For even greater protection a pair of sunglasses with polarized lenses not only protects you from UV rays but also has the added benefit of reducing significant glare from reflective surfaces like water.

Drink water

Keeping yourself properly hydrated during the hot summer months will help in protecting both your eyes and skin from dehydration. The recommended daily intake is a minimum 2 liters a day.

Wear a hat

A wide brimmed hat will give you an added defense towards protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays.

Whenever possible, stay indoors

Try and plan your outdoor activities accordingly giving you the advantage in protecting your eyes from excessive UV exposure.

Choose a pair of good sunglasses

UV treatment in eyeglass lenses blocks the rays from damaging your eyes. For summer, the ideal sunglasses are those with a wrap around frame. It keeps sun, dust and grime out.”

Eye protection while swimming

The cool water is quite inviting on a hot day, but do not forget to take care of your eyes from the chlorine in the pool. In this weather, the incidence of skin infection in swimming pool rises, thus it can lead to eye irritation. While swimming, consider using goggles and afterwards, wash and rinse your eyes properly with fresh water to reduce the redness that is caused due to chlorine water.

Use an eye pack

You can place two pieces of cucumber on your eyes before going off to bed or rather, just spray some rose water to keep your eyes fresh and cool.

 Eye drop is a must

It is not only your skin that dries out during summer, but also your eyes. Eye experts claim using lubricating drops will prevent your eyes from getting itchy.

Following these simple steps will go a long way in ensuring that your eyes are in good condition during the hot summer months.
